Abu Azrael, known commonly as the ‘Angel of Death,’ has become a bit of a
military celebrity, with his face plastered on t-shirts, countless
Facebook fan pages, and even a music video inspired by his motto.
Despite his celebrity, not much is known about his backstory. It’s been
reported that Abu Azrael was a university lecturer before becoming one
of ISIS’s biggest targets. In fact, Azrael claims he never even picked
up a gun until the age of 27.In his fight against ISIS and extremism as a whole, Azrael has said that
he will fight alongside anyone, regardless of their religion.
It’s been reported that Azrael has killed approximately 1,500 ISIS
members since joining the war in June, spurred into joining the war
after the terrorist group killed some of his students. His catchphrase,
illa tahin, translates to ‘nothing but flour,’ which is how he plans to
leave ISIS.
Abu is said to have killed many members of ISIS
single-handedly and has become known for his merciless style. He is
known to decapitate the heads of extremists, and has even burned some of
his enemies alive. ‘We will cut you like shawarma,’ he has been quoted
as threatening.
In many photographs, Abu is seen holding weapons
like axes, swords, and assault rifles. Some reports have even claimed
that ISIS fears him, and forbids any mention of his name. However, he’s
not worried about his fame making him a bigger target, he says it just
makes him all the more determined.
