Daniel Craig might be a Stormtrooper in Star Wars: The Force Awakens [UPDATE]

UPDATE: In a statement to Collider, Simon Pegg said he was just repeating an old rumor about Daniel Craig appearing in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. “It may be untrue, like most of the other rumors, like Cumberbatch and Cruise being in it,” Pegg said.
Last September, The Sun reported that Craig was campaigning for a cameo appearance in The Force Awakens.

EARLIER: Of all the rumors that we’ve heard related to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this one might be the craziest. During an interview with The Sun to promote the new movie Man Up, Anyway, Simon Pegg was asked whether or not he would appear in The Force Awakens as a Stormtrooper on account of his friendship with J.J. Abrams. “I wasn’t a Stormtrooper,” Pegg said. “Daniel Craig, he was a Stormtrooper… I shouldn’t have said that.”
Representatives for Lucasfilm were not immediately available for comment, so we’re looking at two speculative explanations for the Pegg quote. 
1. Pegg is a known jokester, one who has clashed with the press in the past over Star Trek. He is—no doubt—well aware that anything he says about Star Wars is likely to get picked up and aggregated and spread over the internet. If he were to do that with info he just made up, it’s a fun, troll-y prank for Pegg. 
2. On the other hand, it’s not out of the question that Craig, wanting to be involved with The Force Awakens in the tiniest way, slapped on a helmet and stood in the background. It’s highly doubtful that he’d do anything more than that, since a full-fledged cameo would take viewers out of a movie that is otherwise filled with unknown actors. Fueling speculation even further is the fact that Abrams shot Star Wars at Pinewood Studios, the legendary home of the James Bond films.
Without official confirmation from anyone else involved, this will remain a mystery until someone offers up the full story. Or until we see footage of the Stormtrooper cradling a martini.
